Hail runs in strips, so your roof is its own case.

A hail core is narrower than most people picture it. We have walked a Republic subdivision where every roof on one street had bruised shingles, then driven a mile off and found nothing worth photographing. Storms out here do not settle evenly over a town. They come down in strips. That is why what happened to your neighbor, whether he got a new roof or got told no, tells you almost nothing about yours. The only thing that settles it is somebody on your roof with the storm date in hand and a piece of chalk.

Most of Republic went up after 2000, so a lot of what we look at is architectural shingle under twenty years old, and owners assume that means they are fine. Hail does not care how new the shingle is. A big stone hits the mat, crushes the asphalt underneath, and knocks granules loose in a spot about the size of a dime. The shingle stays put and looks right from the driveway, but the mat is bruised and that spot will weather faster than everything around it. The older three-tab roofs near the original downtown core fail differently. They are brittle, so they crack and split outright, and the damage is easier to call.

From the ground you can catch some of it. Watch the downspouts for a heavy wash of granules after a storm, more than the sand a new roof sheds its first year. Look down the ridge for shingles standing up or sitting crooked. Check the north and west faces, because that is usually where our wind comes from. What you cannot see from the ground is the part that decides the whole thing: whether those marks are real bruises in the mat or scuffs and blisters that were already there. That takes a hand on the shingle, which is all a plain roof inspection in Republic really is.

Adjusters rarely work off the shingles alone, and neither do we. The soft metal tells the story. Dents in the gutter apron and drip edge, dimpled vent hoods and turtle vents, bent furnace flashing, bruised air conditioner fins, pocked window screens. Thin metal records a hit that a shingle can hide, and it gives the storm a size and a direction that lines up with the roof. If the gutters took a beating alongside everything else, that comes up in the same conversation, and gutter work in Republic is something our own crew handles rather than subs out.

Wind gets missed more often than hail does, because the shingle is usually still up there. A gust works under a tab, lifts it, breaks the seal strip, and lays it back down looking normal. The crease across the tab is the tell, and so is a course that flutters loose when you lift the one above it. Once that seal is broken the shingle is done holding, and the next round of weather takes it off the deck. Out on the acreage west and south of town, where there is nothing between your roof and an open field, loose tabs are the damage we find most.

Write down the date. Whatever storm you think did it, put the day on paper, and if you have doorbell video or a phone clip of ice in the yard, keep it. Carriers work from a date of loss, and a report with a specific day behind it moves better than one that opens with sometime this spring. Your carrier also sets a limit on how long after a storm you can report it, and that limit lives in your own policy, so read it or call your agent and ask. What we can tell you from the roof side is that damage gets harder to prove the longer it sits, because a year of weather blurs the edges of a fresh hit.

Sometimes the adjuster’s scope and the roof’s real condition do not line up. That is usually nobody acting in bad faith. An adjuster may have thirty roofs to reach that week and forty minutes for yours, and things get missed on a fast walk. We would rather be up there with him than read the paperwork after, so we meet him at the house, show him what we marked, and let him make his own call. When something clearly got left out, the carrier has a supplement process for that, and we hand over the photos to support it. What we will not do is tell you how your claim is going to land. That call belongs to the carrier.

After a hail event in Greene County, the door knocking starts inside a week. Out-of-state trucks, magnet signs on the door, a lot of urgency, a form to sign before an adjuster has been anywhere near the roof. Some of those crews do decent work and some are three states away by August. The question worth asking is plain: where is your shop, and who picks up the phone in three years when a tab lifts. If the roof is open and water is coming in, call and we will get a tarp on it. A tarp is a lid, not a repair. It keeps the decking, the insulation and the ceiling below from taking on more water while the claim gets sorted, and it generally holds a few weeks depending on how hard the wind blows. It will not stop water that is running down a rafter and surfacing ten feet away, and it is not something to live under through a season.
